Adam Michael Sanderson
Florida
Department of Corrections Officer Adam Sanderson age 32, was killed in
automobile crash on March 6, 2009, when the driver of a vehicle fleeing the
scene of a stabbing struck the DOC van head-on in Union County.
Officer Sanderson, who was driving the van, was killed in the crash and a second
officer was injured. The two officers were conducting a perimeter check while
participating in a mock escape drill at the the time.
The suspect driving the truck, who was also a Department of Corrections
employee, was also killed in the crash.
Officer Sanderson had served with the agency for 10 years. He is survived by his
wife and son.
Donna Fitzgerald
On Wednesday afternoon on June 25, 2008
Officer Donna Fitzgerald (51) normally assigned to Caustics was
providing security at the PRIDE auto plant at Tomoka CI. At about 7:30pm
Officer Fitzgerald conducted a security check in the area as it was being
secured and during her patrol was ambushed and murdered by an inmate, who
was hiding for this purpose. We are sickened and saddened by this vicious event
and we join in extending our deepest sympathy to her family, close friends,
fellow staff.
Darla Lathrem
Officer Darla Lathrem Florida
Department of Corrections, Florida Officer Lathrem was murdered
on June 11, 2003. Officer Lathrem was supervising five inmates
on a construction detail inside the Facility, she was attacked
by three of the five inmates as they attempted to escape.
Officer Lathrem is the first female in the Florida Department of
Corrections to be slain in the line of duty. She is survived by
her parents and three sisters.
